The Joys of Teaching

Today, we worked on a lesson that taught capacity. The students learned what a gallon, quart, pint and cup were. They learned how many of each could fill another through a great lesson with colored paper. After students completed a worksheet their homework was to go home and teach their parents about capacity. The parents were to fill out the same worksheet the students had to and then the student would act as the teacher and grade their work. The kiddos were SO excited about this, and wondered if their parents would be fooled. But, when Mrs. Feagan told the students that the worksheet their parents completed would be the one recorded in the grade book, one of the boys in the back pipped up and stated, "I'll be sure to give it to my Dad then." I was almost rolling with that one.

When I catch my breath

Wow!!! So much has been going on here with me and my life. Some bad, but most good. As soon as I have time to sit down and catch my breath I will write my novel of a blog....you better get your reading eyes prepared!!

You know what really stinks??

So, I was getting ready yesterday (more proof of why I just had to look back on the day and laugh) and was straightening my hair. I turned on my straightener and curling iron, as I always do, before I started blow drying my hair. I do that so they can heat up while I am blow drying my hair and then they are ready to use. So, I turned them on, blow my hair dry and went to straighten the little curls when I noticed my straightener wasn't hot. "What a dork!!," I thought. You see, I thought I had just turned on my curling iron and not the straightener. So, I went to flip the switch, but it was already flipped. So, it was flipped, but wasn't hot. It was plugged in, but wasn't hot. UGH!!! It broke!!! How is a girl to finish her hair without an essential tool?? That's what really stinks!!!

Isn't it sad?

Isn't it sad when the people you love the most let you down? When they take you for granted? When they expect you to drop everything you're doing for them, but when you need them they aren't there? I think it's so sad!!

Wow!!! What a crazy day!!

Do you ever have those crazy days? You know, the ones when you look back on them you just laugh? I had one of those days today. And you know how when you have one of those days you just want to share it with the world, but no one is around? Yeah, that's me right now. So that's why you all get to hear about all of the cars, hospital visits and back stabbing.

So, today I went to observe the 3rd grade classroom I have been visiting the past few weeks. It is great to go in there because the kiddos are learning who I am and are just great to be around. I have usually been going for just a couple of hours a day, but today I decided to go all day to try to get caught up on my hours. I pulled up to the school and was immediately struck by the rows and rows of cars. I remembered it was Turkey Day, you know, the day in which the parents come to school to have Thanksgiving Dinner with their kids. So, yup, you guessed it.....I didn't get my usual front row spot, I had to parallel park in tim-buk-tu (PS - I DON'T parallel park). Ugh, what an ordeal.

I get in to the classroom and enjoy watching the students work on their morning seat-work. This is a routine I don't usually get to see. Once they are done, the teacher and I take the kids to their music class and then she proceeds to tell me she's not feeling well and wants to go to the nurse to have her blood pressure taken. Unfortunately, the nurse is in the middle of testing and couldn't do it. So, we go back to the class and wait for the students to get done with music.

Later in the morning, Mrs. Feagan is trying to open a box that is behind me, with scissors. I didn't realize she was doing this, otherwise I would have moved. Next thing I know, I am being stabbed in the back with her scissors. They slipped off the box and landed in my back. You know, I have always heard about being stabbed in the back, but man when it actually happens, it hurts like the dickens. Luckily, she didn't break skin, but I do have a bruise coming in.

About an hour later, Mrs. Feagan tells me she needs to go to the nurse and have her blood pressure taken. She just feels awful and knows something is wrong, so she leaves me in the class. Something that is not supposed to happen, but what was I to do?? Next thing I know, we have a new teacher in there in time to let the students go to recess and lunch. He was followed by the school nurse who was there to pick up Mrs. Feagan's belongings since she was going to the hospital. It must have been really high. So, here I am, sitting alone in this class that I NEED for observations, not knowing whether to go left or right with all of the commotion.

The rest of the day, I observed a great student teacher and got my hours. I'm still up in the air about what will happen with the rest of my observations. I just pray that the teacher is well and I'm so thankful I don't have a pair of scissors sticking out of my back. You never know though, maybe I could have been an inspiration for an episode of Gray's Anatomy.

Isn't it funny??

So, the save the date cards went out last week. What a relief that was. It has been so much fun to have people call and tell us how great they look. Isn't it funny though who hasn't called...I guess it doesn't surprise me much....
